DRY NEEDLING

DRY NEEDLING AT LIFE IN BALANCE PHYSICAL THERAPY

Dry needling is a therapeutic technique where a licensed physical therapist inserts thin, sterile needles into muscles, tendons, or near nerves to relieve pain and promote your body's natural healing process. At Life in Balance Physical Therapy & Pilates, we use this evidence-based treatment to help you move better and feel better—naturally.

HOW DOES DRY NEEDLING WORK?

Dry needling works through multiple mechanisms:

🧠 Resets the Nervous System
  • Activates your body's natural pain relief system by stimulating endorphin release (PMID: 31354339)
  • Helps "retrain" how your brain and nerves process pain—especially beneficial for chronic pain conditions
  • Reduces peripheral and central sensitization that amplifies pain signals
💪 Releases Tight Muscles & Trigger Points
  • Targets "trigger points"—hyperirritable spots within tight muscle bands that cause local and referred pain
  • Often creates a small muscle twitch (local twitch response) that helps release tension and normalize muscle function (PMID: 25661462)
  • Reduces muscle tension and improves range of motion
💉 Boosts Circulation & Healing
  • Creates a controlled micro-injury that stimulates increased blood flow to the area
  • Brings healing cells and oxygen while flushing out inflammatory substances
  • Promotes tissue repair and reduces chronic inflammation
⚖️ Balances the Autonomic Nervous System
  • Calms overactive stress responses in the body—a common issue with chronic pain
  • Helps shift from "fight or flight" (sympathetic) to "rest and repair" (parasympathetic) state
  • Supports whole-body healing and homeostasis

If you're dealing with persistent pain, muscle tension, or movement limitations, dry needling might be the missing piece in your recovery. Our team at Life in Balance Physical Therapy & Pilates is here to help you move comfortably and confidently again—naturally.

DRY NEEDLING WITH ESTIM

At Life in Balance PT, we often combine dry needling with low-frequency electrical stimulation (1-5 Hz) for enhanced results. This approach—called electrical dry needling or percutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (PENS)—has shown significant benefits in research.

Benefits of Adding Electrical Stimulation:
  • Enhanced pain relief:  Multiple studies show electrical dry needling provides superior pain reduction compared to dry needling alone (PMID: 29864043)
  • Improved function:  Research on knee osteoarthritis found that patients receiving electrical dry needling were 1.7 times more likely to stop taking pain medication compared to exercise and manual therapy alone
  • Better outcomes:  75% of patients achieved successful outcomes with electrical dry needling versus 18% with standard treatment in one multicenter trial (PMID: 29864043)
  • Cellular healing:  Low-frequency microcurrent stimulation may help restore cellular ion balance and promote ATP production for tissue repair
  • Nervous system regulation:  Electrical stimulation enhances the calming effect on the autonomic nervous system, promoting deeper relaxation and healing

WHAT CONDITIONS DOES DRY NEEDLING HELP?

Research supports dry needling for a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions (PMID: 28158962, 36769852):

Common Conditions We Treat:
  • Neck & Shoulder Pain:  Myofascial trigger points, tension headaches, chronic neck pain (PMID: 33066556, 25269764)
  • Back Pain:  Low back pain, sciatica, muscle spasms, lumbar instability
  • Joint Pain:  Knee osteoarthritis, plantar fasciitis, hip pain, shoulder impingement
  • Sports Injuries:  Tennis/golfer's elbow, Achilles tendinitis, rotator cuff issues, IT band syndrome
  • Chronic Pain Conditions:  Fibromyalgia, widespread myofascial pain (PMID: 28158152)
  • Post-Surgical Recovery:  Scar tissue treatment, restoring movement after surgery
  • Headaches & TMJ:  Tension headaches, jaw pain, temporomandibular dysfunction
